(Salt Lake City, Utah – October 27, 2023) The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is excited to announce that Jeanne M. Day, RHIA, CHAM, the Director of Health Information Management & Patient Access at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, will be presenting at the upcoming AHIMA24 conference in Salt Lake City. Her session, titled "Surviving and Thriving During a Cyber Attack," is scheduled for October 28, 2024, and promises to provide invaluable insights into managing health information in crisis situations.
In December 2020, amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Greater Baltimore Medical Center experienced a cyberattack that rendered all computerized systems inoperable for an unprecedented 29 days. Day will share firsthand experiences from this critical incident, focusing on the impact faced by the Health Information Management (HIM) department, including Coding and Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) units, during the cyberattack and the subsequent recovery process.
During her presentation, Day will detail the specific scenarios the organization confronts, downtime processes and workflows implemented to mitigate disruptions, and strategies for the successful recovery of essential HIM functions, such as birth registration, CDI, coding, deficiency analysis, and release of information. Attendees will gain insight into the pain points encountered both during the downtime and throughout recovery, along with lessons learned that led to the redesign of pivotal policies, procedures, and workflows.
