What makes you uniquely qualified as an educator or practitioner to serve on the Council for Excellence in Education (CEE)?
I am qualified for the position on the Council for Excellence in Education because I am an HI practitioner, educator, and engaged member of AHIMA. I am an active practitioner with twenty-eight years of experience. I have worked in the hospital setting in the traditional Health Information Department, where I started my career as a file clerk back in the paper chart days through my current role as Director of Program Development and Education for NJHA-Healthcare Business Solutions. I went from clerk to coder to supervisor to manager and now I am a director. In my role at NJHA, I am responsible for not only educating and managing our staff, but I also present coding education as needed to our clients. Programs include ICD and CPT Updates annually.
During my years in the hospital, I have been privileged to work on projects transitioning from paper to the EMR. I have experience on multiple EMR platforms and encoding solutions. As noted in my opening paragraph, I am also an educator. I have been an educator for the past fourteen years, teaching at the community college level for Rowan College at Burlington County (RCBC). Not only have I been a Senior Adjunct Instructor at RCBC since 2011, but I am also a graduate of the program. I feel that gives me a unique perspective, having been on both sides of the program. Of course, the program has evolved over the years since I graduated, and I work with the program director on course content, curriculum, and resources as the classes evolve and get updated. I have been teaching classes starting with ICD-9 coding, Intro to Coding, ICD-10 (both CM and PCS), CPT, and a Pharmacology class. I have worked on the RCBC HIT Advisory Board, and I am currently co-chairing the Coding and Billing Program Advisory Board. I consider myself a mentor to students both current and past.
To this day I have students from the first class I taught reach out to me for help and advice. I have been an avid volunteer both in my own CA, New Jersey, and on multiple practice councils and task forces for AHIMA over the years. On the state level, I have been volunteering for NJHIMA in many capacities for more than 20 years. I have served on the NJHIMA Board in multiple roles, including two terms as President in 2012 and again in 2023, currently ending my term as Past-president and Delegate in 2025. I have worked as the Education Chair, Membership Chair, Advocacy Chair, Grassroots for ICD-10 implementation, Annual Meeting Co-chair, and Director/Delegate. I have also participated in many AHIMA Practice Councils, including Clinical Terminology and Classification, Governance Agility Task Force, and currently the CR Advisory Council. I have also worked on the CDIP Standards Setting Panel, and as a CCS Item Writer. I see myself as a well-rounded HI Professional, educator, and volunteer with many perspectives and experiences. I have spent my career as a team player, and I want to help make our HI profession stronger and prepare our students to become the HI Professionals of the future.
