What is Data for Better Health?

The American Health Information Management Association® (AHIMA®) launched the Data for Better Health initiative to increase awareness of how collecting, using, and sharing social determinants of health (SDOH) data can improve individual and community health and healthcare outcomes.

The Data for Better Health Executive Leadership Summit is part of a strategic initiative to provide tools, resources, and education to support a better understanding of the importance of SDOH data. The goals of the initiative are to:

  • Engage healthcare professionals working with SDOH to understand the business case for the collection of SDOH data and share strategies for success.
  • Educate and engage with consumers to build trust and a greater understanding of SDOH and the benefits of sharing SDOH information with healthcare professionals.
  • Advance policy and advocate to policymakers by developing and promoting an SDOH data agenda.
  • Support innovation within the healthcare ecosystem to accelerate the adoption of best practices and new models.

Why Now?

When SDOH data is appropriately collected, used, and securely shared, the entire healthcare team can gain insight into various elements that make up a person’s medical and nonmedical story, allowing them to work on improving an individual’s overall health and well-being.

The COVID-19 pandemic put a clear spotlight on inequities in healthcare, and regulatory guidelines are moving toward adding SDOH data collection into value-based payment models. The federal government has signaled broader interest in measuring the field’s progress on improving health equity.

Why AHIMA?

As the leading voice and authority in health information, AHIMA is uniquely positioned to lead this effort.

Health information professionals play a pivotal role in how SDOH data is collected, shared, and ultimately used to improve health and healthcare outcomes. They work at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and business, allowing them to lead and collaborate with others in the healthcare workforce who rely on this data.

AHIMA will work to advance health equity through healthcare professionals working with SDOH data and with thought leaders, policymakers and the public.
