Diane Dolezel, PhD, MSCS, RHIA, CHDA

Biography

Diane Dolezel, PhD, MSCS, RHIA, CHDA, is an Associate Professor in the Health Informatics and Health Information Department at Texas State University. She teaches graduate and undergraduate classes in healthcare statistics, healthcare informatics, advanced healthcare data analytics, healthcare quality management, and healthcare databases. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy, an MS in Computer Science, and a BS in Health Information Management.

She edited a book on healthcare informatics and authored several of its chapters. At the university, she serves on the faculty-student research forum and works on several university initiatives seeking to engage students in data science.

Her teaching interests include healthcare statistics, healthcare informatics, advanced healthcare data analytics, healthcare quality management, and healthcare databases.

In the area of research, Dr. Dolezel has focused on organizational determinants of healthcare quality. Dr. Dolezel also made a substantial contribution to the area of privacy and security with a focus on individual compliance behaviors. She has published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, Decision Support Systems, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Computers & Security, Brain Sciences, Journal of American College Health, and several other journals.

She serves on multiple university-level committees, including the Graduate and Undergraduate Scholarship Committees, and the Financial Aid, Advisory Appeals, and Scholarship Committee. At the department level, she is a member of the HIM Graduate and Undergraduate Curriculum committees and the BSHIM and MHIM advisory committees.

Position Statement

What makes you uniquely qualified as an educator or practitioner to serve on the Council for Excellence in Education (CEE)?

As an educator and researcher with over 15 years of experience in the classroom, I am uniquely qualified for this position due to my commitment to teaching health informatics and information management graduate and undergraduate classes. I hold a PhD in Education, a master's degree in computer science, and a bachelor's degree in health information management. I have developed many graduate and undergraduate classes focusing on hands-on learning and evidence-based data analytics including research, health informatics, data visualization, quality management, and machine learning classes. I am passionate about providing authentic learning to engage students and foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Throughout my career, I have taught campus-based, hybrid, and fully online classes to both underserved and international students. My AHIMA, AMIA, and HIMSS memberships have provided valuable insights into the importance of experiential learning and the need for a global perspective in education. My skill set makes me well qualified to serve on the CEE and contribute to promoting excellence in education.
