Bridging the Analytics Silos

By Susan White, PhD, RHIA, CHDA, Chief Analytics Officer at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

Analytics is a hot topic and a commonly used buzzword in the healthcare industry. These days, the term “analytics” may refer to anything from a report listing patient appointment dates to a complex machine learning model used to automate the reading of diagnostic tests. Whether an organization’s analytics reporting is simple or complex, all analytics professionals ultimately want to ensure the right person has the right data at the right time.

At a large academic medical center, disparate analytic teams living in their own silos make it difficult to avoid duplication of efforts and often result in more than one answer to critical questions. Can you imagine asking “What is our average length of stay?” and getting three different answers? If you work in analytics or IT at a hospital, I am guessing you can not only imagine that situation but also have a few other examples to share.

At Ohio State University (OSU), we opted to create an Analytics Center of Excellence (ACE) using a hybrid model to centralize much of the analytics resources—but still allow collaboration with analytics teams with specialized expertise. During my session on Monday, October 10 at AHIMA22, we will discuss the motivation behind using the hybrid model to bridge the silos and not necessarily break them down. I will also walk through some of our accomplishments at OSU over the last two years as we created this new department during a pandemic. Finally, I will share lessons learned and future plans as we continue our hybrid model approach.
