Tips from an Expert Panel for Preventing Cyberattacks

According to the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Information Security, the first ransomware attack in 1989 was initiated through a floppy disk and demanded $189 from its victims.

Now fast-forward to today’s online, digital healthcare world. More than one in three healthcare organizations globally experienced a ransomware attack in 2020, with an average cost of $1.27 million, including the ransom itself, downtime, and various recovery costs.

If your organization is attacked, cyber insurance can cover ransomware demands and remediation. But coverage isn’t a given. Strategies and overall cyberhygiene can affect an organizations’ insurability.

AHIMA and Olive AI convened an expert panel to explore how organizations, vendors, and suppliers can be prepared. The result is the white paper “Cybersecurity: A Comprehensive Risk Management Approach for Healthcare.” These are a few of its recommendations:

  1. Plan an enterprise-wide approach to cyber risk management and the business imperative of cybersecurity.
  2. Build a solid data governance foundation. Understand where data originates, its use, who has access, and for what purpose.
  3. Because cyber-risk is everywhere, thoroughly understand your risks and vulnerabilities before you prioritize and allocate resources to cybersecurity.
