Informatics Competencies Curriculum Overview
Health informatics professionals come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Many Health Information Management (HIM) professionals, as well as others from both clinical and non-clinical backgrounds, currently practice in health informatics roles. As defined by AHIMA’s Informatics Committee of the Board, “Informatics is a collaborative activity that involves people, processes, and technologies to produce and use trusted data for better decision making.” This definition recognizes the value that professionals from many healthcare areas can bring to the health informatics workforce.
Curriculum Competencies
AHIMA is inspired to provide HIM professionals and others with both clinical and non clinical backgrounds a course of study that supports the needs of the contemporary healthcare employer. AHIMA draws from its many years of leadership in informatics domains of practice such as standards for data content, information exchange and interoperability, data management, health information technology and others. The AHIMA Informatics Committee of the Board has approved AHIMA’s curriculum competencies for graduate level health informatics programs. Members of this committee included industry leaders, association executives, informatics practitioners and educators. The intent of these competencies is to provide direction and support for academic programs seeking to offer curricula to prepare students to meet informatics workforce needs of the future. AHIMA’s goal is to align with schools to offer graduate level academic programming built from these competencies that reflect the need to prepare individuals for positions across the healthcare horizontal and focusing on operational or applied informatics positions.
Educator Collaboration and Support
An annual educator meeting—the Assembly on Education Symposium (AOE)—is held each summer with a new informatics track planned for 2018. The commitment, desire to lead, and collaborative nature of the AOE education community is unparalleled. We welcome and support those who wish to be part of this innovative group that works to advance health informatics education. Books, webinars and convention activities are also available to support educators and student learning.
If you are interested in learning more about how to adopt these competencies for curriculum development activities, the free compendium user guide and soon to be released to any programs that are using these competencies, or for questions on any of the other noted resources, please contact us at Academic.Affairs@AHIMA.org.
Informatics Credential
AHIMA is proud to introduce a new certification, the Certified Professional in Healthcare Informatics (CPHI), which is gaining traction in the healthcare setting. Individuals completing graduate level programs in health informatics that have adopted the AHIMA competencies are eligible to sit for the CPHI exam. See the CPHI certification webpage for additional requirements and information.
