Consistent coding and reporting requires that all coders apply the code sets in a uniform manner. This is a challenge since no two patients are the same and the context of the specific encounter and the documentation provided must always be considered when applying medical codes. In addition, the code sets are updated annually.

AHIMA’s Standards of Ethical Coding are based on the AHIMA Code of Ethics. Both sets of principles reflect expectations of professional conduct for coding professionals involved in diagnostic and  procedural coding or other health record data abstraction.

AHIMA practice briefs provide practical and consensus-based guidance on best practices for accurate and compliant coding and reporting. The full suite of coding-related practice briefs is available in the AHIMA BoK. Some coding-related practice briefs include:
AHIMA toolkits are developed to assist those working in HIM and health informatics with practical tools. The Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) Toolkit was developed to provide guidance on how to prepare for and ensure compliance with the Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) program, including identifying an internal support team, developing policies and procedures, establishing an educational program, and following through with the responses to the RAC.
