Need a Mentor?

Just starting out with AHIMA? Looking for some guidance? New member mentors provide a convenient way for new members to explore the benefits of AHIMA membership.

Don't be shy! The following people are available to speak with you about using Association resources for career development. Select the mentor's name and send them an e-mail.

Jennifer Toedte, RHIA
Director, HIM
Carlinville Area Hospital
Staunton, IL

Jennifer has worked in health information since 1998. She earned her associate's degree from Southwestern Illinois College, and later acquired her RHIT. After earning her bachelors’ degree from Saint Louis University, and later her RHIA, she started her career as a file clerk and worked her way up to the position of director at a Critical Access Hospital. Jennifer has also taught HIM at a local college.

Jennifer says “A mentor is someone who provides access to learning and growth. It is through the mentor relationship that deep learning occurs. The mentor provides a framework for exploration by creating a context that provides support, encouragement, and growth.”

Barbara Fuller, JD, RHIA
Assistant Director for Ethics
National Human Genome Research Institute, NIH
Bethesda, MD

Barbara Fuller has worked in multiple healthcare settings, including inpatient and ambulatory care. She currently manages the ethics program at the National Institutes of Health. Fuller is directly responsible for policy initiatives for the ethical and legal aspects of genetics research. Her branch is also involved in developing educational initiatives and designing outreach opportunities for diverse segments of the population.

Barbara was AHIMA's president in 2003, and shares the following thoughts on mentoring: “I care about our HIM students and the difficulties they may face juggling school and home, and probably work. I can provide life experience, if not guidance, in coding.”

Elisa R. Gorton, RHIA
Director, Revenue Cycle/Privacy Officer
Hall-Brook Behavioral Health Services
Westport, CT

Elisa Gorton graduated from the University of Bridgeport with a BS in Medical Records Administration. In 2004, Elisa earned her Master of Arts in Health Systems Management from Sacred Heart University.  She served as manager of health information services and privacy officer and as assistant director of health information management at Greenwich Hospital from 1989 to 1991. Since then, Elisa has worked as a medical record consultant for a long-term care center and dialysis center.
