e-HIM® Overview

One of AHIMA's areas of strategic focus is electronic health information management (e-HIM® ).
Our goals are to:

• Promote the migration from paper to an electronic medical records information infrastructure,
• Reinvent how institutional and personal health information and medical records are managed, and
• Deliver measurable cost and quality results from improved information management.

To support these goals, AHIMA offers a number of resources and products designed to educate the healthcare industry and prepare our members to transition to electronic health records.

Health information professionals manage a variety of types of information across the healthcare industry. Health information management deals largely with patient or individual-related data. Management of health information uniquely stems from the knowledge of clinical, management, and informatics principles and is performed by individuals focused at the strategic, management,
and technical levels.

A Vision of the e-HIM® Future

AHIMA's "e-HIM: Vision to Reality "report states that the future of HIM is electronic, patient-centered, comprehensive, longitudinal, accessible, and credible. Publication of the task force report is made possible by a grant to FORE from Siemens Medical Solutions Health Services.
