View a listing of accredited two and four year programs in your area.

Some educational institutions also offer a coding certificate program. The Council on Accreditation of the American Health Information Management Association, in seeking to approve quality coding instruction, has developed a process by which organizations involved with coding education can be peer reviewed against a minimum set of criteria for comprehensive medical coding training. This process allows academic institutions, healthcare organizations, private companies, etc. to be acknowledged as offering an AHIMA approved coding educational model. Please contact each Approved Coding Program directly for enrollment information. To view a listing of all approved coding programs and to review what types of courses are taken please visit HealthInformationCareers.com and click on coding certificate tab. After reviewing the website if you still have questions you can submit an email at the email address identified under “Contact Us” on the website.

AHIMA has available a comprehensive Web-based medical coding program. Coding Basics teaches the fundamentals of medical record coding through interactive lessons. The program consists of 12 courses. It provides an entry level medical coding training and is a combination of online and textbook learning. Students have 15 weeks to complete each cluster, however one can enroll in more than one cluster and finish the program more quickly. Call (312) 233-1158 or view more information about the program.
