Compliance

Data quality and compliance are of the utmost importance in coding for all patient settings. One cannot appropriately assign codes without considering the impact those assignments will play on both the quality of the data or compliance to applicable federal and state rules and regulations.

AHIMA plays a significant role in developing and implementing effective medical coding guidelines and procedures at the national level. AHIMA is the only coding membership organization represented at several important medical coding meetings, including the Coding Clinic for ICD-9-CM Editorial Advisory Board and the CPT Editorial Panel. AHIMA is one of the four Cooperating Parties (with the American Hospital Association, National Center for Health Statistics, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid) that work together to clarify ICD-9-CM medical coding guidelines. AHIMA is committed to ensuring quality in health data and health information management by building alliances at the state and national level to coordinate mutual regulatory and legislative efforts.

AHIMA promotes the integrity and management of coded data across the healthcare continuum. Through the Communities, certified medical coders come together in their pursuit of the goals of data quality and compliance. Community resources provide invaluable tools such as the Standards of Ethical Coding, which serve as guidance for all medical coders to apply in performing their daily functions. In an effort to assist their peers in achieving the goals of data quality and compliance, the citizens of a Community collaborate, network, and provide tools to assist in ensuring accurate medical coding.
