Remote Online Proctored Certification Exams

Exciting News: You can now take some certification exams remotely

For the first time, AHIMA is offering proctored certification exams online so health information (HI) professionals can take some certification exams remotely at the time and place of your choosing.

We recognize that HI professionals have demanding work and busy lives. By taking scheduling and travel of in-person testing out of the equation, we hope to make it easier for you to earn your HI certification and advance your career.

Once you have completed your exam preparation, simply take the test online.

AHIMA is partnering with PearsonVUE to bring their online testing platform, OnVUE, to HI certification. This opportunity is currently available for candidates located in the United States for the following certifications, and we will be expanding it to others soon:

Remote proctored exams provide:

  • Comfort, convenience and flexibility – No travel needed. Take the exam where you test best, anywhere that’s quiet and where you won’t be interrupted.
  • Seamless testing experience – By using the latest OnVue testing technology, we ensure a secure, reliable, and uninterrupted exam experience. The testing platform is user-friendly and easy to navigate.
  • Uncompromised integrity – The exam provides the same recognized, rigorous AHIMA evaluation of ability and knowledge as in-person exams and awards the same credential.

FAQs

OnVUE is Pearson VUE’s online proctoring exam delivery solution. It allows candidates to test conveniently from the comfort of their home. For more information be sure to review the OnVUE Guide.

At this time, OnVUE is only available for the AHIMA specialty certifications which includes CHPS, CDIP, and CHDA.

To schedule a testing appointment, you must have applied for and received an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter containing your eligibility number and scheduling information. The ATT letter will include a link and information about scheduling your exam. (Please ensure that your first and last name match your ATT letter and your two forms of acceptable identification.)

For a successful OnVUE exam experience, prior to scheduling your OnVUE online appointment, please verify you meet all OnVUE requirements and complete the following necessary steps:

  • Candidates must be located in the United States.
  • Please review the video located on the Pearson VUE website, “OnVUE Testing Experience” to verify you meet all the requirements.
  • Run a system check with the computer you will be using to take your online certification exam to ensure a successful exam experience. Work computers generally have more restrictions that may prevent a successful exam experience (e.g. firewalls). Please review the OnVUE technical requirements guide.
  • Prepare your desk/workspace by removing all prohibited items (e.g. paper, books, pencils/pens). Use a desktop or laptop with a single monitor (Tablets touch screens, and stylists are NOT allowed.)
  • Use a wired internet connection rather than WiFi, if possible, to ensure consistent connectivity throughout your exam experience.

Prior to your exam, please make sure you have the correct equipment, best internet connection, have run a system test, and prepared your testing space before beginning the check-in process. You may check in 30 minutes prior to your appointment time. Sign in to your Pearson VUE account and click on the Begin Exam button. As part of the check-in process, you will be required to:
  • Download the OnVUE application.
  • Complete a final system check.
  • Close all other applications on your computer.
  • Provide photos of yourself, your two forms of identification, and your testing space.
Tips for taking your exam online can be found here.

If you require test accommodations in order to take your online exam, you must apply for and receive approval from AHIMA before scheduling your exam.
