Coding Training — Acute Care
STAGE I: Awareness, Assessments, Foundation Training Recommended training: 3-6 hours
ICD-10 Awareness Training
AHIMA Awareness Training prepares coders for ICD-10-CM/PCS implementation by introducing the new code sets through two overview webinars: Getting Started with ICD-10-CM, What Coders Need to Know and Getting Started with ICD-10-PCS, What Coders Need to Know. Each presentation familiarizes coders with the organization and structure of the new code set and the similarities and differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10. The discussion covers coding conventions and introduces the system’s guidelines. Each webinar is 1.5 hours long.
Readiness Assessments
AHIMA’s readiness assessments are invaluable tools that measure coders' readiness for ICD-10-CM/PCS by gauging foundational coder knowledge. Focused assessments are also available to gauge knowledge in specific topic areas. The foundational PCS and CM assessments each consist of 100 questions, while the focus assessments provide 20 questions each. Assessments are optional and sold separately.
Foundation Training Courses
AHIMA’s online foundation training courses include foundational training in medical sciences to prepare coders for the transition to ICD-10-CM/PCS. Includes in-depth courses in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and pathophysiology and pharmacology. Other shorter topics include ICD-10 A&P-focused courses on neoplasms; the respiratory system; the circulatory system; the central and peripheral nervous systems; the musculoskeletal system; and pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium. These captivating courses include interactive activities and color illustrations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Select a topic below to view the frequently asked questions and answers, related to ICD-10 Online Training Pathways.
DEFINING ICD-10 ONLINE TRAINING PATHWAYS
Is a pathway a program?
No. A pathway is a staged approach to learning ICD-10-CM/PCS for all types of users, including administrators, non-coders, and coders in multiple settings.
Will these courses provide me with a certification, or prepare me for certification exams?
No. These courses all include assessments that the individual/employer can use to track proficiency in ICD-10-CM/PCS, however, there is no certification tied to these courses nor will it prepare an individual for a certification exam.
How do these courses differ from other AHIMA courses offered?
The majority of these courses are short, focused courses that take between 1 and 2 hours to complete. They focus on a specific subject area within ICD-10-CM or ICD-10-PCS.
How do the courses/stages/pathways differ from face-to-face training like the AHIMA Academy for ICD-10?
The ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS courses cover some of the same material that is covered in the AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS Academies, just in an online format in small, focused pieces.
DETERMINING YOUR INDIVIDUAL ICD-10 LEARNING NEEDS
How does an experienced coder learn the coding system of ICD-10?
An experienced coder learns ICD-10 by becoming familiar with the guidelines and organization of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS, and by practicing case scenarios. The online training pathway for coders is intended for experienced coders and introduces ICD-10 in comparison to what the coder is familiar with in ICD-9-CM.
If I am new to coding, are these the right courses to take, since ICD-10 will be the new coding system?
No. These courses are intended for those coders who are experienced with the ICD-9-CM code set. Those that want to learn coding should consider taking AHIMA's Coding Basics program.
How do I determine which pathway I should follow?
The pathway you follow depends on your role and setting. For instance, if you are an inpatient coder in an acute care setting, you would follow the pathway titled "Coding Training Acute Care." If you are a non-coder, you would follow the pathway titled "Organizations and Non-Coding Staff." If you are a coder working in a physician office, long term care, or home health setting, you would follow the pathway titled "Coding Training Specialty Settings."

Can each item be purchased separately?
Yes, the individual assessments and courses may be purchased separately.
The 22-course bundle of ICD-10-CM chapter specific courses should be taken in its entirety, along with the ICD-10-CM Overview Course, to prepare acute care coders for coding diagnoses from all body systems.
Those coders who work in specialty settings may choose to select only those courses that pertain to their particular setting.
Coders who currently assign ICD-9-CM procedure codes in the acute care setting will need to take all 10 of the ICD-10-PCS root operation courses, along with the ICD-10-PCS Overview Course. The individual purchase option of the ICD-10-PCS courses is for those who have already received comprehensive training on ICD-10-PCS codes (e.g., attended an AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS Academy) and may want further instruction/practice on a certain area.
Do the dates on the timeline indicate when organizations should complete learning activity or when the products will be available by AHIMA?
The dates indicate when the products will be available by AHIMA. Organizations should develop their own timeline for when they will complete each individual learning activity. AHIMA's role-based model is an ideal tool to use to identify what type of training should occur for different settings/roles.
When can I register?
You can register for any online training that is currently available.

VALUE AND BENEFITS
How useful would these be in helping an organization implement ICD-10?
The courses would be helpful for multiple levels of the organization in implementing ICD-10. For instance, the products available for the administrative-level will help them to know the key issues surrounding ICD-10 and be able to formulate a strategic plan for effective implementation. The coding-specific courses are a solution for organizations that need to get their coders fully trained in ICD-10-CM/PCS by October 1, 2014.
